Grad Gown Sizing
If you intend to attend the ceremony, you will need to be sized for a gown. Sizing will take place in the second week of March; students will be asked to see Ms. Baudin in Room 219 during block 1. Grads should wear the shoes they intend to wear for the ceremony (or shoes similar in height) for sizing to insure that the gown is the correct length. Students who have completed their courses will need to come into the school on their own accord for sizing. Even if you are “not sure” whether or not you will graduate, you should size anyway. Gowns can be cancelled if necessary at a later date. Oversized or full-fit gowns are available at no extra cost. The student should indicate at the time of height sizing if a full-fitted gown is preferable. Grads should watch the bulletin for more specific information regarding sizing time and location.
The grad gowns are blue in color with a white V-stole and a tassel. The gown is a rental, and must be returned in excellent condition. All students will be responsible for taking care of the gown and ensuring that each gown is returned in its original condition. Gowns never leave the school grounds – students dress in the multi-purpose room with access to the gym change rooms. Students may not smoke, eat, or drink anything except water while wearing the grad gown.
Gown Replacement Costs
If damaged or missing, students will be required to pay replacement costs of:
- Gown - $64.75
- Stole - $8.50
- Full Fit Gown - $89.60
Wearing the Gown
Students wear the gown over top of their clothing, so please ensure that you have appropriate clothing on underneath. Students may put the gown on over existing banquet wear, or they may choose to change into cooler garments. Boys must wear pants and dress shoes (no jeans, shorts or runners) and girls may wear pants or skirts with appropriate dress shoes. There is a bit of walking involved in the ceremony, so comfortable shoes are important.
Each student is given a grad cap and souvenir tassel that is his or hers to keep. The cap is a “one size fits all” and may either be worn or carried close to the chest as students choose. Most students wear the cap, as it is a symbol of accomplishment. Please bring bobby pins to secure the cap from slipping.
The fee is $50.00 for each student. Please note that at this time all outstanding student fees must be paid in order to participate in Grad Ceremony. Grad fees will be collected from May 14 – 18, 2018 in the office. Cheques made payable to “SVRSS SCHOOL FUNDS”. This fee covers the cost of the grad gown rental, shipping fees, diploma photo, souvenir cap and tassel; it also helps to cover the cost of ticket/program paper, additional yearbook costs, decorations, and rentals as grads choose for the auditorium. This fee is non-refundable after June 8, 2018, as the gowns cannot be returned for refund after they are shipped.
Student Ceremony Committee
Only those students who sign up for and attend regular grad ceremony meetings will have a say in the selections made for the ceremony including: valedictorian, guest speaker, ushers, theme, song, decorations, program etc. If you want to take part in these decisions you need to volunteer for the committee and commit to a role. The first Grad Ceremony meeting will be Monday, March 5, 2018 in room 219 at noon with Ms. Baudin.
Grads taking part in the graduation ceremony may receive up to 6 guest tickets. Tickets will be distributed from the Resource Centre the week of June 4 - 8, 2018. All outstanding school fees and grad fees must be paid before tickets will be distributed. When paying grad fees, requests for extra tickets will be taken. If extra tickets become available, they will be distributed evenly amongst those who requested them. See Mrs. Cathy Petelski in the Resource Centre or contact her for individual requests at 734-4511, ext. 2141, or email to email@example.com.
Special seating will be made available only for the disabled and the elderly who cannot sit in the bleachers. If you have special seating needs, please see Mrs. Petelski in the Resource Center and she will take your requests. You can also contact her via email at firstname.lastname@example.org. The deadline to reserve special seating is Friday, June 15, 2018 (maximum 4 seats per grad).
Grad Banquet (this is an optional event)
The banquet is a buffet roast beef supper held at the Swan River Curling Rink beginning at 7:30 pm; this is an optional activity. Tickets for the banquet will be sold from May 29 – 31, 2018. Cheques made payable to “SVRSS SCHOOL FUNDS”. All outstanding school fees and grad fees must be paid before banquet tickets can be purchased. Grads must include themselves when determining the number of tickets needed. Grads may purchase as many tickets as necessary and may request the following: seating preferences (near another grad), special seating (wheelchairs, walkers, etc.), and gluten free meals. Seating is assigned; therefore, the tickets CANNOT be transferred between grads. Price per ticket to be determined once menu is finalized.
Safe Grad is a committee of parents who plan the Safe Grad event for the graduates and their guests the night of graduation. This committee works in conjunction with Grad Banquet. There are 12 different committees that are chaired by parents. These committees, along with a SVRSS staff member (Mr. Pardoski), plan the activities and procedures for the evening. The various committees include: Chairperson(s), Decorating, Facility, Clean-up, Entertainment, Prizes, Fundraising, Security, Food & Safe Grad, Bar, Transportation, and Medical Personnel. Committee formation occurs at the Tuesday, February 20, 2018 grad parent meeting. The meeting will take place at 7:00 pm in the Multi-Purpose Room. Please plan to attend.
Jodi Proctor will be the grad photographer. It has been indicated that a group photo is desirable. This is usually taken about 45 minutes before the ceremony begins. Each student will also be photographed on stage as he/she receives his/her diploma. Those who receive scholarships or bursaries will also be photographed for the yearbook.
Grad photos are February 27 – March 2, 2018. Sign up forms are posted on the bulletin board in the office. A sitting fee of $25 must be paid directly to the photographer at time of photo. Graduates will receive an 11x14 composite as part of their sitting fee. There is a $5 charge for grads being photographed for the composite & yearbook only. Grad photo retakes are Thursday, April 5, 2018.
Kevin Penner will be the grad videographer. Mr. Penner will be set up in the front hall from May 29 – 31, 2018 to take orders. The cost for a DVD or Blu-Ray is $30 or $35 for both.
