École Swan River South School first opened its doors as the Swan River Collegiate Institute in the fall of 1960.
In September 1972 it became the Swan River Junior High. In September of 1995, it became École Swan River South School. As the only French Immersion School in the SVSD it draws its base population from within this division. We also have a small number of nonresident students enrolled in our school.

The population of the school peaked in the early 1980's at around 410 and today stands at 240 students with a teaching staff of 16. The school's professional staff includes a full time principal and a teaching assistant principal. As well, there is a school librarian, a full time resource teacher, 13 educational assistants and 1 school mentor. The staff also includes secretarial and custodial personnel.

Mission Statement

École Swan River South School is a kindergarten to grade eight French Immersion and a grade six to grade eight English School committed to the development of the learner in both official languages within a safe learning environment which strives to be challenging, supportive, tolerant and understanding of the individual needs of each learner.

Student Support Services

There is an important emphasis placed on using a collaborative approach among staff for the planning and delivery of programs. The resource program plays a key role in identifying those students requiring special assistance and in planning for their programming.

Students also benefit from the availability of a speech clinician, school social worker and a reading recovery teacher. These specialists work collaboratively with teachers and parents.

Student Assessment

Student assessment is ongoing throughout the school year in order to provide students and parents with information about how well students are doing in relation to program objectives.

A report card is sent home three times a year in December, March and June.
Parent Teacher interviews are held at the December and March reporting periods.
Edline allows parents to monitor their child's progress in a regular and consistent manner.

Students in participate in provincial assessments.

  • Grade 3 - Math, Reading
  • Grade 4 - Reading
  • Grade 7 - Student Engagement & Math
  • Grade 8 - Math, Reading, Writing

Programs

The regular academic program follows the Education Manitoba guidelines as it relates to course offerings. At the kindergarten to grade six level the majority of programming is done by the classroom teacher. At the grades seven and eight level every effort is made to limit the number of teachers an individual class will encounter.

School Goal

By May, 2009, students will increase their level of personal responsibility by a minimum of 10% as measured on a perception checklist completed by parents, students and teachers.

We plan to achieve this by:

  • Create a checklist and complete in October
  • Teach goal setting strategies and monitor goals throughout the year
  • Teach conflict resolution/mediation skills
  • Monitor/encourage use of agendas
  • Implement monitoring/reward system in classrooms for homework, assignment completion. student engagement

Technology

The ÉSRSS integrates technology into classroom subject areas. Our school has two Computer Labs which teachers use to integrate technology into the curriculum. Each classroom in our school has a computer for classroom use. As well, several computer stations exist in our school library and school resource room.

The School as a Safe and Secure Place

We believe that school should be a positive experience for all. This can best be facilitated within a nurturing and respectful environment. Communication between staff and parents is strongly encouraged so that follow-up to problem situations can take place quickly.

Active adult supervision is provided before and after school as well as during recess and noon hour breaks.

Parents in the School

At ESRSS we believe that parents, teachers and children are partners in learning and that the success of this partnership is dependent on mutual respect, cooperation, and good communication. Telephone calls, meetings, written communication and an open door policy help maintain and strengthen parent/teacher connections.

ESRSS has a Parent Advisory Council (P.A.C.) that meets once a month at the school. ESRSS also has a French Immersion Parent Organization that meets regularly throughout the year.
